As the sun sets, it casts long shadows across the Grote Hegge, the lake that borders Parc Maasresidence Thorn. In the distance, I can hear the chatter and delighted screams of kids playing and the joyous bustle of clattering glasses and chattering people on the terrace of Humphrey’s Thorn.
I stretch my legs as I sit on the balcony of our four-person maisonnette, enjoying the fresh evening breeze. I went out sailing with some friends today, and as they are preparing for a night out in Thorn, I’m taking a moment’s rest. With a cold beer in my hand, I watch as the sky puts on a brilliant display of increasingly dark colors. The silver glistening of the water starkly contrasts the deep pink and orange glow of the evening sky. Our sailboat bobs up and down peacefully in the marina, awaiting a new, wind-swept day.
I realize how fortunate I am to sit here.
We are one of the first to try out the new harbor apartments of Parc Maasresidence Thorn. The hotel rooms, apartments, and maisonnettes are brand new, and yet, it already feels like they were always meant to be here. In coherence with the charming brick-and-mortar villas, the harbor apartments have this look and feel as if they truly belong to a village. Yet… the traditional house style harbors a secret… The inside is groomed, fresh, and modern. Large windows and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors flood the rooms with natural light, which splashes against the beautifully crafted wooden backdrop on the walls. The downtown grey floor and kitchen tiles give off a cool aura, even on the hottest summer days.
All harbor apartments flaunt the same well-groomed style. The bedrooms follow suit, with light wooden tints, reed patterns, and snowy white linen. The fresh look and feel of the bedroom provide a comfortable haven from the blazing Southern Dutch sun.
And then there’s the balcony… Even with my legs stretched out, I feel small. The broad, covered balconies extend towards the water, providing a breathtaking panorama of the harbor and the Maasplassen lakes. Yesterday, we all sat here around the candlelight, quietly recalling the events of the day. We played a few rounds of Hearts at the state-of-the-art wooden table until we could barely see the cards. I put them away and there we sat. In silence. A lone cricket sang its final song. Only the waves, that broke upon the boulevard, broke the silence. Everything was as it was supposed to be.
But that’s enough sitting and reminiscing. Everyone is ready. It’s time to find out what the nightlife in the quaint white town of Thorn has to offer!
